FAQs About Our Our Domain Privacy
What is Domain Privacy?
Domain privacy, also known as ID Protection. Whenever a domain name is registered or updated, the contact details of its owner are automatically published in an online database known as the WHOIS database. This is a requirement from the Internet’s governing body, and works like a big phone directory, allowing people to track down the owner of a domain name should they need to get in touch. In theory this sounds sensible enough, but in reality publishing all your private data on the Internet isn’t a smart move, and gives potential scammers and spammers access to your name, address and phone number.
How Does it Work?
Domain privacy from Garanntor replaces your contact details with our information, and keeps your personal information hidden from public scrutiny. You’ll remain the legal owner of the domain, and we’ll forward on any email communications sent to you.
What is the WHOIS Database?
The WHOIS database is the Internet’s telephone directory. It stores all the details of domain name registrations. Once you’ve registered your domain name, your contact details are published. This includes your name, address, email, and phone number. Plus the admin, billing and technical contacts. Along with the name servers, registration, renewal, and expiry dates of your domain name. The database allows people to track down the owners of a domain name should they want to get in touch.
How to Activate ID Protection on Domain
If you’re registering a new domain name, you can enable domain privacy on the Configure Your Order page. For already purchased or existing domain names, log in to your Garanntor account and find your registered domains in your client area. You can then choose one or all and enable ID Protection or domain privacy under the add-on tab. For more information, see How to Purchase Domain Privacy for an Existing Domain
Is Domain Privacy Available for all Extensions?
Not all registries allow the use of domain privacy on their domain extensions, in particular country code domains (ccTLDs). Details of which extensions accept domain privacy can be found on our big domain extensions list if you choose the domain privacy filter under features. The list of extensions that allow domain privacy will increase over time.
